When the going gets tough the tough get going, it sounds like a line from any big movie, maybe any famous couple on the big screen.
But no, we at Floorballmania are not talking about cinema but about Floorball, the most beautiful sport in the world, where two teams of 15/18 players each, face each other with great strength and physicality and if there were no tough players on the pitch, game would turn into a race like that, there will only be one left.
Do you understand who the tough guys are?
It is they, the Referee couple, loved or hated, respected or feared, it is they who put themselves in the middle of the most difficult situations to make a game go smoothly, it is they who in a split second choose what is right or wrong, they it's the tough guys who come into play.
In floorball there are many top level refereeing couples and they are not only Swedes, Finns, Swiss, but top level couples are also found elsewhere, one of these is the Norwegian couple, newly elected international, Bugge-Neumann.
Floorballmania today will introduce you to one of them Alexander Neumann.
- Hi Alexander, thank you very much for accepting our interview, we send our regards to you and your family, obviously also to your fellow Referee. Introduce yourself to our readers, who is Alexander Neumann?
Hi guys! Sure thing, I am honored to participate in this.
I am Alexander Neumann, 38 years of age and as you correctly pointed out a newly appointed 2021 – 2022 IFF referee from Oslo, Norway. I have had a passion for floorball all my life.
When I`m not refereeing I work as a lawyer for Norwegian customs, I have a Master of laws degree (LL.M) from the University of Oslo. I am also a referee observer for referees in the regional league.
Above all I am a dedicated father to a 10 year old girl and a 8 year old boy.
2) Floorball is a fantastic sport, when did it become part of your life? Can you tell us about your first day in floorball?
Floorball has been part of my life as long as I can remember. I played with my friends and neighbours outdoors since I was maybe 6-7 years old on also from that time on with my father and his colleagues at his work place who had a weekly training session just for fun. I later started playing for them in a low level company-league. It wasn’t until I was 15 I started playing for a proper club and I remember I was shocked at my first practice with that team by how much more skilfull the other players (who were all 17-18) were.
3) When did you choose to become a referee? And above all why did you choose the refereeing career? Have you always been coupled with Georg Bugge? How long have you been arbitrating together?
As stated, I first started out as a player like so many other referees. In my younger years I honestly didn`t really take knowledge of or appreciate that much how the refs influenced the game. As I grew older I started to notice differences between communication and leadership styles between the different refs. I was fascinated by how some refs made tough matches flow easy with seemingly little effort because of their skills in communication and leadership.
I have been a referee since 2006 when I started refereeing in the aforementioned company-league. It started as a part time job for me as a student. I had also quit my playing career at the age of 21-22 because of injuries.
I worked my way over to the regular leagues as a ref in 2010 where my first ever game was in the mens senior 5th divison. I was admitted to the top national level in 2015. This part time job has now developed into a passion and I don’t see my refereeing as “only a job” anymore but a career.
I have had 3 other colleagues before Georg. On the top level I was paired with Mads Dørstad who is now focusing more on his playing career, before me and Georg joined forces. Me and Georg started refereeing together in 2018, in fact an agreement between us regarding a collaboration and the creation of the team Bugge-Neumann was made during the time when we attended the mens WC 2018 in Prague as spectators.
4) What type of a referee is Bugge? On the other hand, are you a friendly referee with the players or do you keep a certain gap? How would you describe yourselves as a refereeing pair?
Georg is a very calm and collected referee. He is intelligent and hard working. I believe these personality traits are visible when he is on the field.
I consider myself a friendly referee towards the players. Floorball is a quite small sport here in Norway and I knew some of the players and coaches from before I started refereeing on the top level. I believe that it is possible to differenciate between your role as a referee and you as a person outside of the arena in someways, as long as you are conscious about always being objective and neutral during your time in the arena.
As a pair I think we are perceived as calm and serious, and we like to think that we always come in to games with an open and positive attitude and a smile on our faces.
We like to be openminded and listen to opinions from the team-captains for instance, but we always make up our own minds before we decide if we follow those demands/ “advice” about something in the game.
We both enjoy watching floorball matches of all levels. We do it to learn and improve as refs, but mostly for the sheer entertainment and love for the game.
5) What is the most difficult match you have directed? What was the most difficult decision, paired with Bugge, that you had to make during a match?
I would say that the most difficult matches were some of the games I had when I refereed in the mens top level league with my former colleague a few years ago. It sometimes was difficult to gain the respect of some players as a brand new, quite young and unknown referee pair. In order to build a mutual respect and understanding it requires a build up over time by showing that you are capable to handle such tough games. With Georg in the womens league, we have been fortunate to avoid any big controversies.
6) What are the differences between a male and a female match? What do you pay more attention to in a male competition and to what in a female one?
There are not that many differences, after all it is the same game. I would say a difference is the level of acceptance for the referees decisions, where the females in many cases tend to respect those better. Another difference is the level of aggression between the players, female players can off course also get angry and frustrated from time to time but you rarely see any fighting. The biggest difference can be how quick a game can go from calm to out of control. In a womens match you normally see a build up of tension between the two teams over time which normally requires a big situation (like a hard tackle) to explode. Whereas on the mens side the build up sometimes happen much faster and can seemingly take-off at any given point if the circumstances are right.
To choose one thing regarding what to pay more attention to in mens matches, my answer will be that it sometimes is necessary to follow more closely what happens in those first few seconds after the ball has left a situation. This can be done by keeping your vision locked in to the situation a little longer and letting the other referee be responsible for following the ball.
7) How do you and your fellow Referee prepare for an important match? What do you do before the game? Do you get information on the teams? Do you study the teams before the game? What exactly do you do before a big game?
Regardless of the importance of the match we do the same preparations. In the last days leading up to the game everything is prepared and planned into detail. We go through the premliminary line ups as soon as they are ready online, we study the table and the previous encounters between the two teams. We look at their form in the last games, if they have signed any new players and so on. We normally contact each other to see if there is anything special about the upcoming game we must address, but also to plan the practicalities. Be it to figure out who is driving to the game, plan our outfits we wear when we arrive at the arena or which color jersey we should wear for the game. I like to ensure to be proper nutrioned, to get enough sleep and get all of my workouts in as usual to be prepared both mentally and physically.
On the game day I make sure to eat a healthy meal (preferably oatmeal porridge with fruit/berries) about three hours before the game. We get to the arena between 1,5 hours to 1 hour before the game. Once there we have our routine which consist of greeting the hosts, the secreteriat and the teams if possible. We check the rink and ensure that everything looks ok. We like to have some coffee and we change into our outside warmup – gear. I believe it is important to always go for a run or take a walk outside to get some fresh air about 30 min before the game. After that warm-up session we prepare ourselves in the locker room, fixing our gear and pairing our headsets. We are ready and present at the rink 10 minutes before the game.
8) Which match would you like to referee? How important is the table of judges for you referees? Have you ever made use of the TV test in the field? If the answer is yes what happened?
We have yet to referee the womens final here in Norway so that is one of our goals. On the international level any match would be very exciting for us. Needless to say, the biggest goal is to take part in a world cup. I would also love to be given the chance to referee games in other elite levels leagues in floorball, for instance in part of an exchange program with other nations. By table of judges I understand that you mean the match secreteriat. They play a vital role in helping us as referees and we strive to always have a good and open communication with them. We don`t have the opportunity to review footage in our national league during games so I have not tested it yet.
One thing I do is that I watch most of our games on the internet in the comfort of my own home, often a day or two after the game, to learn from mistakes and to see what we can improve in specific situations.
9) In 2021 you and Bugge will be an international couple, have you already had any indications on your first match to referee? What do you expect?
Yes, we are very proud to have been nominated by our national federation. We are actually the only norwegian couple in the IFF this period. There has been relatively many before us, and I hope Norway can nominate more referees in the future. I must add that we also have two norwegian referee observers in the IFF for the 2021 -2022 nomination period.
We have not been given any indications yet, the period started only two weeks ago and some events (like the womens WC qualifiers) have been postponed due to the pandemic. We have no expectations on what assignments we will get but we have high hopes and ambitions.
10) Let's play a game, your Referee couple is assigned the Senior Women's Final of the World Cup, what would you like to whistle and what not, of the situations that follow during the match?
1) a penalty in the 59th minute
2) a red card to the Captain
3) Cancel the goal of the tie, scored at the last second.
That is one great question, ha ha. In case of this dream becoming a reality one day, it would not be so wise of me to answer this. All of these situations would be tough to be in I`d imagine.
If I absolutely have to choose one, I go with the 59th minute penalty. I believe that clear and punishable offences must be taken regardless of the timing and of the significance of the game. I would not prefer to send off the captain or any other player for that matter, but I must add that I will do it if she deserves it.
I will say though, that we never set out with a goal to make many big decisions in a game, but rather to get as many we can right. After a match its always a good feeling if you got the big ones right, but it is about the fairness for the teams, and never about us taking the spot light.

Quando il gioco si fa duro, i duri iniziano a giocare, suona come una battuta di un grande film, forse di una coppia famosa sul grande schermo.
E invece no, noi di Floorballmania non parliamo di cinema ma di Floorball, lo sport più bello del mondo, dove due squadre di 15/18 giocatori ciascuna, si affrontano con grande forza e fisicità e se non ci fossero giocatori tosti sul passo, il gioco si trasformerebbe in una gara del genere, ne rimarrà solo una.
Capisci chi sono i duri?
Sono loro, la coppia Arbitri, amati o odiati, rispettati o temuti, sono loro che si mettono al centro delle situazioni più difficili per far andare bene una partita, sono loro che in una frazione di secondo scelgono ciò che è giusto o sbagliato, sono i tizi che entrano in gioco.
Nel floorball ci sono molte coppie arbitrali di alto livello e non sono solo svedesi, finlandesi, svizzeri, ma si trovano coppie di alto livello anche altrove, una di queste è la coppia norvegese, neoeletta nazionale, Bugge-Neumann.

Ciao Alexander, grazie mille per aver accettato la nostra intervista, porgiamo i nostri saluti a te e alla tua famiglia, ovviamente anche al tuo collega Arbitro. Presentati ai nostri lettori, chi è Alexander Neumann?
Ciao ragazzi! Certo, sono onorato di partecipare a questo.
Sono Alexander Neumann, 38 anni e come hai correttamente sottolineato un arbitro IFF 2021-2022 di nuova nomina da Oslo, Norvegia. Ho sempre avuto una passione per il floorball.
Quando non sono arbitro, lavoro come avvocato per la dogana norvegese, ho una laurea in giurisprudenza (LL.M) presso l'Università di Oslo. Sono anche osservatore arbitrale per arbitri del campionato regionale.
Soprattutto sono un padre devoto per una bambina di 10 anni e un bambino di 8 anni.
2) Il floorball è uno sport fantastico, quando è diventato parte della tua vita? Puoi parlarci del tuo primo giorno nel floorball?
Il floorball ha fatto parte della mia vita da quando ricordo. Ho giocato con i miei amici e vicini di casa all'aperto da quando avevo forse 6-7 anni anche da quel momento con mio padre ei suoi colleghi sul posto di lavoro che avevano una sessione di allenamento settimanale solo per divertimento. In seguito ho iniziato a giocare per loro in un campionato aziendale di basso livello. Non è stato fino all'età di 15 anni che ho iniziato a giocare per un vero club e ricordo di essere rimasto scioccato al mio primo allenamento con quella squadra da quanto fossero più abili gli altri giocatori (che erano tutti 17-18).
3) Quando hai scelto di diventare arbitro? E soprattutto perché hai scelto la carriera arbitrale? Sei sempre stato in coppia con Georg Bugge? Da quanto tempo arbitrate insieme?
Come detto, ho iniziato come giocatore come tanti altri arbitri. Negli anni della mia giovinezza, onestamente, non conoscevo o apprezzavo molto il modo in cui gli arbitri hanno influenzato il gioco. Crescendo ho iniziato a notare differenze tra gli stili di comunicazione e di leadership tra i diversi ref. Sono rimasto affascinato dal modo in cui alcuni arbitri hanno reso facili le partite difficili con uno sforzo apparentemente minimo a causa delle loro capacità di comunicazione e leadership.
Sono arbitro dal 2006, quando ho iniziato ad arbitrare nel suddetto campionato aziendale. È iniziato come lavoro part-time per me come studente. Avevo anche lasciato la mia carriera da giocatore all'età di 21-22 anni a causa di infortuni.
Mi sono fatto strada nei campionati regolari come arbitro nel 2010, dove la mia prima partita in assoluto è stata nella quinta divisione maschile senior. Sono stato ammesso ai massimi livelli nazionali nel 2015. Questo lavoro part time si è trasformato in una passione e non vedo più il mio arbitraggio come "solo un lavoro" ma una carriera.
Ho avuto altri 3 colleghi prima di Georg. Al livello più alto ero in coppia con Mads Dørstad che ora si sta concentrando maggiormente sulla sua carriera da giocatore, prima che io e Georg unissimo le forze. Io e Georg abbiamo iniziato ad arbitrare insieme nel 2018, infatti un accordo tra noi per quanto riguarda una collaborazione e la creazione della squadra Bugge-Neumann è stato fatto durante il periodo in cui abbiamo partecipato al mens WC 2018 a Praga come spettatori.
4) Che tipo di arbitro è Bugge? D'altra parte sei un arbitro amichevole con i giocatori o mantieni un certo distacco? Come vi descrivereste come coppia arbitrale?
Georg è un arbitro molto calmo e raccolto. È intelligente e lavora sodo. Credo che questi tratti della personalità siano visibili quando è in campo.
Mi considero un arbitro amichevole nei confronti dei giocatori. Il floorball è uno sport abbastanza piccolo qui in Norvegia e conoscevo alcuni giocatori e allenatori prima di iniziare ad arbitrare ai massimi livelli. Credo che in qualche modo sia possibile distinguere tra il tuo ruolo di arbitro e te come persona fuori dall'arena, purché tu sia consapevole di essere sempre obiettivo e neutrale durante il tuo tempo nell'arena.
In coppia penso che veniamo percepiti come seri e seri, e ci piace pensare che entriamo sempre in partita con un atteggiamento aperto e positivo e il sorriso sui nostri volti.
Ci piace essere di mente aperta e ascoltare le opinioni dei capitani delle squadre, ad esempio, ma decidiamo sempre le nostre menti prima di decidere se seguire quelle richieste / "consigli" su qualcosa nel gioco.
Entrambi ci divertiamo a guardare le partite di floorball di tutti i livelli. Lo facciamo per imparare e migliorare come arbitri, ma soprattutto per puro divertimento e amore per il gioco.
5) Qual è il match più difficile che hai diretto? Qual è stata la decisione più difficile, in coppia con Bugge, che hai dovuto prendere durante una partita?
Direi che le partite più difficili sono state alcune delle partite che ho fatto quando ho arbitrato nel massimo livello maschile con il mio ex collega qualche anno fa. A volte era difficile guadagnarsi il rispetto di alcuni giocatori come coppia di arbitri nuova di zecca, piuttosto giovane e sconosciuta. Al fine di costruire un rispetto e una comprensione reciproci, è necessario aumentare nel tempo dimostrando di essere in grado di gestire partite così difficili. Con Georg nel campionato femminile, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di evitare grandi controversie.
6) Quali sono le differenze tra un incontro maschile e uno femminile? A cosa presti più attenzione in una competizione maschile e cosa in una femminile?
Non ci sono molte differenze, dopotutto è lo stesso gioco. Direi che una differenza è il livello di accettazione per le decisioni degli arbitri, dove le femmine in molti casi tendono a rispettarle meglio. Un'altra differenza è il livello di aggressività tra i giocatori, le giocatrici possono ovviamente anche arrabbiarsi e frustrarsi di tanto in tanto, ma raramente si vedono litigi. La differenza più grande può essere la velocità con cui una partita può passare da calma a fuori controllo. In una partita femminile normalmente vedi un accumulo di tensione tra le due squadre nel tempo che normalmente richiede una situazione importante (come un contrasto duro) per esplodere. Considerando che dal lato degli uomini l'accumulo a volte avviene molto più velocemente e può apparentemente decollare in un dato momento se le circostanze sono giuste.
Per scegliere una cosa riguardo a cosa prestare maggiore attenzione nelle partite maschili, la mia risposta sarà che a volte è necessario seguire più da vicino ciò che accade in quei primi secondi dopo che la palla ha lasciato una situazione. Questo può essere fatto mantenendo la visuale bloccata sulla situazione un po 'più a lungo e lasciando che l'altro arbitro sia responsabile di seguire la palla.
7) Come vi preparate tu e il tuo collega arbitro per una partita importante? Cosa fai prima della partita? Hai informazioni sulle squadre? Studi le squadre prima della partita? Cosa fai esattamente prima di una grande partita?
A prescindere dall'importanza della partita, facciamo gli stessi preparativi. Negli ultimi giorni che precedono il gioco tutto è preparato e pianificato nei dettagli. Passiamo in rassegna le formazioni premliminarie appena sono pronte online, studiamo la classifica e gli incontri precedenti tra le due squadre. Guardiamo la loro forma nelle ultime partite, se hanno ingaggiato nuovi giocatori e così via. Normalmente ci contattiamo per vedere se c'è qualcosa di speciale nel gioco in arrivo che dobbiamo affrontare, ma anche per pianificare gli aspetti pratici. Che si tratti di capire chi sta guidando alla partita, pianificare i nostri abiti che indossiamo quando arriviamo all'arena o quale maglia di colore dovremmo indossare per la partita. Mi piace assicurarmi di essere adeguatamente nutrito, dormire a sufficienza e svolgere tutti i miei allenamenti come al solito per essere preparato sia mentalmente che fisicamente.
Il giorno della partita mi assicuro di mangiare un pasto sano (preferibilmente porridge di farina d'avena con frutta / bacche) circa tre ore prima della partita. Arriviamo all'arena da 1,5 ore a 1 ora prima della partita. Una volta lì abbiamo la nostra routine che consiste nel salutare i padroni di casa, la segreteria e le squadre, se possibile. Controlliamo la pista e assicuriamo che tutto sia a posto. Ci piace prendere un caffè e cambiamo la nostra attrezzatura da riscaldamento esterna. Credo che sia importante andare sempre a correre o fare una passeggiata all'aperto per prendere un po 'd'aria fresca circa 30 minuti prima della partita. Dopo quella sessione di riscaldamento ci prepariamo negli spogliatoi, sistemando la nostra attrezzatura e accoppiando le nostre cuffie. Siamo pronti e presenti in pista 10 minuti prima della partita.
8) Quale partita vorresti arbitrare? Quanto è importante il tavolo dei giudici per voi arbitri? Hai mai usufruito del test TV sul campo? Se la risposta è sì, cos'è successo?
Dobbiamo ancora arbitrare la finale femminile qui in Norvegia, quindi questo è uno dei nostri obiettivi. A livello internazionale qualsiasi partita sarebbe molto emozionante per noi. Inutile dire che l'obiettivo più grande è prendere parte a una coppa del mondo. Mi piacerebbe anche avere la possibilità di arbitrare partite di altri campionati di livello elite nel floorball, ad esempio in parte di un programma di scambio con altre nazioni. Per tabella dei giudici capisco che intendi la segreteria della partita. Svolgono un ruolo fondamentale nell'aiutarci come arbitri e ci sforziamo di avere sempre una comunicazione buona e aperta con loro. Non abbiamo l'opportunità di rivedere i filmati del nostro campionato nazionale durante le partite, quindi non l'ho ancora testato.
Una cosa che faccio è guardare la maggior parte delle nostre partite su Internet nel comfort di casa mia, spesso uno o due giorni dopo la partita, per imparare dagli errori e vedere cosa possiamo migliorare in situazioni specifiche.
9) Nel 2021 tu e Bugge sarete una coppia internazionale, hai già avuto indicazioni sulla tua prima partita da arbitrare? Cosa ti aspetti?
Sì, siamo molto orgogliosi di essere stati nominati dalla nostra federazione nazionale. In questo periodo siamo l'unica coppia norvegese dell'IFF. Ce ne sono stati relativamente molti prima di noi, e spero che la Norvegia possa nominare più arbitri in futuro. Devo aggiungere che abbiamo anche due osservatori arbitri norvegesi nell'IFF per il periodo di nomina 2021-2022.
Non ci sono ancora state date indicazioni, il periodo è iniziato solo due settimane fa e alcuni eventi (come le qualificazioni ai mondiali femminili) sono stati rinviati a causa della pandemia. Non abbiamo aspettative sugli incarichi che riceveremo, ma abbiamo grandi speranze e ambizioni.
10) Facciamo una partita, la tua coppia Arbitri viene assegnata alla Finale Senior Femminile dei Mondiali, cosa vorresti fischiare e cosa no, delle situazioni che seguono durante la partita?
1) un rigore al 59 ° minuto
2) un cartellino rosso al Capitano
3) Annulla il gol del pareggio, segnato all'ultimo secondo.
Questa è una grande domanda, ah ah. Nel caso in cui un giorno questo sogno diventasse realtà, non sarebbe stato così saggio da parte mia rispondere. Sarebbe difficile immaginare tutte queste situazioni.
Se devo assolutamente sceglierne uno, vado con il 59 ° minuto di penalità. Credo che le infrazioni chiare e punibili debbano essere prese a prescindere dai tempi e dal significato del gioco. Non preferirei espellere il capitano o qualsiasi altro giocatore del resto, ma devo aggiungere che lo farò se lei lo merita. Devo dire però che non ci siamo mai prefissati l'obiettivo di prendere molte decisioni importanti in una partita, ma piuttosto di prenderne quante più possibile. Dopo una partita è sempre una bella sensazione se hai capito bene i grandi, ma si tratta di correttezza per le squadre, e mai di noi che prendiamo i riflettori.
